Jeremiah 32:17
tells us that nothing is too hard for the “Sovereign Lord”, the Creator
of “the heavens and the earth.” He is able to deliver us “from wicked
and evil men”, to “strengthen and protect us from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:2-3). We are enabled to persevere because “the Lord directs our hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance” (2 Thessalonians 3:5).
As the Lord Himself leads us in His love, leading us not into
temptation and delivering us from evil, He “removes the dross from the
silver, and out comes material for the silversmith” (Proverbs 25:4).
What God did for His people, Israel, was very great. There is a striking contrast between their slavery in Egypt and their abundance in the promised land. God had multiplied His blessing upon them, just as Jesus did when He turned water into wine (John 2:1-11). If the blessing is to be maintained and increased, we must honour the Lord. We must cry to Him for blessing: "Hear my prayer, O God, listen to the words of my mouth." We must call upon Him with faith: "Surely God is my help; the Lord is the One who sustains me" (Psalm 54:2,4).
