The
people of God had been blessed by God. They had much to celebrate. The
Lord had brought them out of the land of bondage. He was about to bring
them into the land of promise. As we celebrate the love of God, we give
the place of highest honour to Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Why
did God give Israel the promised land? It was because He āloved themā (Psalm 44:3). We know the love of God in Christ. Concerning Christ, we say, with thanksgiving, āYou give us victory over our enemiesā (Psalm 44:7). In Him, we rejoice ā āIn God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise Your Name for everā (Psalm 44:8).
There is to be prayer from āevery one who lives in the landā (Joel 1:14). It is to be personal prayer - āO Lord, I cry to You for help!ā (Joel 1:19). These two belong together - prayer for the nation and personal prayer. This is expressed so well in the words: āO Holy Ghost, revival comes from Thee. Send a revival. Start the work in me.ā We hear the words, āReturn to the Lord, your Godā (Joel 2:13). They are followed by some wonderful words about the character of God - āHe is merciful and compassionate, patient and always ready to forgive and to change His plans about disasterā (Joel 2:13). How do we know that God is like this? We look at what He has done for us - āBe glad and rejoice. The Lord has done great things!ā (Joel 2:21). Looking at all that the Lord has done for us, we trust His promise: āWhoever calls on the Name of the Lord will be savedā (Joel 2:32). This salvation is more than forgiveness for past sins.
