Jesus’ parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16)
teaches us that all that we have, apart from our sin, is received from
God as a gift of His grace. We must remember this when, like Job, we are
going through hard times. We don’t have the right to expect everything
to be going great all the time. When we are enjoying the Lord’s
blessing, we must never forget that this is not something we have
earned. It’s the blessing of His grace, the blessing which has been
given to us by the Lord. The more we come to know His blessing, the more
we will have confidence to say, “I call on You, O God, for You will
answer me” (Psalm 17:6).
What God did for His people, Israel, was very great. There is a striking contrast between their slavery in Egypt and their abundance in the promised land. God had multiplied His blessing upon them, just as Jesus did when He turned water into wine (John 2:1-11). If the blessing is to be maintained and increased, we must honour the Lord. We must cry to Him for blessing: "Hear my prayer, O God, listen to the words of my mouth." We must call upon Him with faith: "Surely God is my help; the Lord is the One who sustains me" (Psalm 54:2,4).
